The Aroma of a Freshly Opened Bag of Jalapeno Potato Chips

It rained yesterday – all day – the boys moved the furniture from out of the boathouse to under the tent awning and the party went on – a little more laid back, yes. It’s good to have this time to spend with family and friends, he announced as part of a toast – you didn’t know that I was a minister, did you?  [His was an ordination by mail]. They were playing their mixes, tipping back what beer remained (I think the goal is to drink the place dry) and pigging out on the catered food that was left from the reception. All the while the rain continued to come down – plip, plip, plip. This morning it is foggy and if you’re groggy it’s a fine morning for you – but if you are still hungover you're probably still be in bed and will only greet the new day only after it has become hot and muggy – it’s going to be a shirt-stick-to-your-back kind of day and the tent needs to come down and be returned along with the tables and chairs. Everything else that remains is consumable and is being consumed.

The fishing industry worldwide receives $27b in government subsidies – more than 25% of the value of the fish caught. There is currently a 50-60% oversupply in world’s fishing fleets and fish stocks are collapsing.

The rules of different sports confirm and consolidate the insulation that separates athletics from the everyday world. Each set of rules is meaningless except in an actual competition – Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht – In Praise of Athletic Beauty, 2006 p77

The GNP accounts for the production of government and that of non-profits by their inputs rather than by their outputs and this means that any increase in efficiency is recorded as a decrease in production. By definition any non capitalist economic process is inefficient.

The justice of industrial capitalism in America, said Andrew Carnegie, is that society ‘here’ will not fail to reward a man of talent – Richard Sennett – The Hidden Injuries of Class, 1972 p72

Don’t cry. Pretty girls are everywhere. Wish for me and wish me the best. To articulate the past historically does not mean to recognize it the way it really was. It means to seize hold of a memory as it flashes up at a moment of danger – Walter Benjamin

Siracha - garlic blended with Serrano chilies. How many Scoville units? A fresh hard bite in the back of your mouth - then a low burn that builds to an eye blinking, hair-raising throb

A Scoville unit is a measurement of capsaicin level in a particular pepper or variety. It is named after Wilbur Scoville of Parke Davis Pharmaceuticals. It was devised in 1912.  Scoville ground chilies in a mixture of water & sugar. He measured number of  dilutions with water that it took before the burning sensation could no longer be detected

- pure capsaicin - 16,000,000
- Habanera, Scotch Bonnet - 100,000 to 350,000
- Serrano - 5,000 to 30,000
- Cayenne, Tabasco - 30,000 to 50,000
- Jalapeno - 2,500 to 5,000
- Poblano - 1,000 to 1,500
- Anaheim - 500 to 1,000
- Pimento, Bells - 0 to 100

Capsaicin stimulates the nerve endings in your mouth, fooling your brain into thinking you’re in pain. The brain responds by releasing endorphins.

This is primarily a horse camp but other campers are welcome – we have two troops of Boy Scouts in among the horse trailers. Trail Dog gives a bark and goes running off – a string of trail riders comes to a halt –  the man on the lead horse warns his companions, that there is a small dog. I go and fetch him. I apologize, he don’t know that he is small. It’s kind of obvious, says the man. Not to him, I say. And they ride on. Maybe a hundred thousand Trail Dogs might have stood their own but not just one.

The value of services performed by householders (cooking, cleaning, childcare, chauffeuring, home and auto repair) depending on how they are assessed can be valued at anywhere from 20-50% of GNP
