Stuff Means Speed - We Live in its Buzz

The sun has gone. The day has gotten dreary. Will it rain? Will it get cold again? Will it stay this dreary all day? A breeze blows in from the south. The clouds are moving towards the east.

Circling back to him on that…the basis is…if we can bump that up to…I have the offer letter…bump up the days we would decrease the commission… The reason that I don’t mind bringing this up…is there something else that you would rather have…we have to revise the offer letter…if we meet our targets you will get your full bonus anyway…I try to explain to everyone that you can not take the package as a fixed deal. The information is disjointed because I don’t have all the information at hand. It sounds exciting and I am so anxious. I am excited about working with all the publishers and getting the relations going again. We feel this is a key role and are very excited to have you on board. If I can get my notices in on time I would like to take several days to decompress. Again I want to tell you how excited we are to have you aboard and how critical we feel this position is. And I’m so excited to be able to be coming on board during this critical phase.

You don’t choose where you belong and where you don’t. But what if the place you don’t belong is the only place you have left – Stuart Neville – The Ghosts of Belfast, 2009 p52

More high school students smoke marijuana than smoke tobacco. A much higher percentage of Americans think that marijuana should be taxed if it were legal that believe it should be made legal.

Cigarettes are the only way to make bleakness nutritional, or at least useful; something to do while feeling terrified – B H Fairchild – The Art of the Lath, 1998 p27

It had been predicted that it would get into the upper fifties today but it is foggy and had only reached the mid-thirties by mid-afternoon. Joe and Marias have not come in today. Joe went to Omaha I later learned. Marias will not come on his own. My stomach aches. I belch and eat more tacos. I have only one beer. Then I go back home.

Vice is often the fertilizing manure of virtue – Machado De Assis – Epitaph of a Small Winner, 1952 137

25% of all single or widowed Americans over 65 years of age have no other source of income other than their social security benefits

When everyone says the same thing and it is the easiest answer, you know damn well it’s baloney – Vera Caspary – Laura, 1943 p74

It is symptomatic that no written constitution knows of money as a political force – Oswald Spangler – The Decline of the West, 1965   p372

Half of all US $100 bills are in circulation outside of the country.

SENSE sings. / a world where chaos and cosmos are interlaced and superimposed, / where anything may happen, // but nothing happens twice // - perceive, perceive, reality is ‘make’ believe // (that everything happens at once is the form of The Dance) – Roland Johnson – ARK, 1996 BEAM 8

“Substantially underfunded” state pension funds account for just 3.8% of state and local spending and if fully funded would only account for 5% of their spending.

To Spengler, the West was a corpse; to Levi-Strauss, it is a cancer – J G Merquior – From Prague to Paris, 1986 p104

Stuff means speed
We live in their buzz
We live intensely

Push the button
“Door Close” It does not
Must push it again

What are the consequences
The heartbeat races – times flies

There is just not enough
Time space stuff
Not enough of any of it

Need more need more
Time is money – instant credit
Fast food - Speed dial - real time

No time no time
The clock is ticking
About to go off

Life’s a rush
Don't over analyze

Imagination, writes Blanchot, is not a region beyond reality, but reality “as a whole”, cancelled out by the negating power of language – J G Merquior – From Prague to Paris, 1986 p114

It is only profound differences that will earn an anthropologist a dissertation.
